Museo Maritimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia, Ushuaia

4.1
Housed in Ushuaia's spider-like former prison building, Museo Maritimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia tells the story of the city's seafarers and their irresistible yearning to explore the wilderness of Antarctica. Perched at the very tip of the continent, the museum captures Ushuaia's frontier-town atmosphere and the sense of intrigue about what lies in the waters beyond. Smell the salt in the air and feel the chilly ocean winds as you learn about explorers who colonized Argentina and the impact their arrival had on the area's indigenous people. The former prison complex houses several other museums worth checking out during your visit. • We tried to join a guided visit but the crowd was so big we could hardly listen to the guide so we decided to walk around. Each wing host different collection of objects. There are very varied things displayed in each of what used to be a cell. Themes such as immigration to Ushuaia, geology, ships. One whole wing is a souvenir shop and and another hosts a maritime art collection. The most interesting Wong for us was the one that has been kept unrestored and were you can appreciate what the prison actually looked like when it was in use.
  • Amazing museum. So much information and so many displays. 1100 pesos admission but it gives you 2 days of admission. It’s so huge that we needed the 2 days! Very cool that they restored most of it but left one wing original. There’s an art gallery, info on Ushuaia, the prison and lots of Marine information. If I had a choice I’d definitely choose this museum over the others in town. We were very impressed!!
