There are few better places to learn about Australia's penal-colony heritage than the Port Arthur Historic Site on the southeastern coast of Tasmania. Once a prison for Britain's hardest criminals, the complex's remains now serve as an open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite the prison's grim purpose, it offers a scenic setting on the water surrounded by densely forested hills. Take a walking tour to learn about the prison's history, dine at Felon's Bistro, and then conduct a paranormal investigation with ghost-hunting equipment late at night. Port Arthur Historic Site Reviews
I first visited 25 years ago and every time I return it is more and more commercialised Lots of houses were off display, some houses that were open you couldn’t go upstairs. This was the last time I w... more »
Wasn’t expecting such a good set up. Each person gets a playing card which refers to a character you have to hunt them out in the centre to read about them, good fun for both adults and children. This... more »
Excellent place which I'd put right in the top of the to do list if you're in the southern part of Tasmania! The grounds are big and have lots of history to explore. Plenty of scenic places to have a nice relaxing picnic, and many of the buildings are little museums in themselves. If you're looking for a cheap feed, I'd recommend Port Arthur general store for decent burgers and chips. Leave at least 8hrs to explore! Would definitely recommend!
Loved loved loved this amazing place. Beautifully preserved and so much history of human hardship. Beautiful day. Pity there are not any water coolers around the grounds to fill up the water bottle. Or a kiosk in the middle somewhere. Good idea to take a picnic although there is a great Cafe at the visitor centre and up near the museum. Staff were super friendly and helpful. It would be an idea to have someone in the segregation building to stop the tour guides destroying the solemn and quiet serenity of a place where so many suffered. Laughing and noisy tour groups need to be reminded to shut up. Do the talk outside and show some respect. Have some signs in other languages so that foreigners know to be quiet. If people are on the short cruise, don't bag a seat and then leave your jacket on it and stay outside like towels on the deck chairs in resorts. When You leave your seat, that's it gone to someone else. It's called sharing.
