There are few better places to learn about Australia's penal-colony heritage than the Port Arthur Historic Site on the southeastern coast of Tasmania. Once a prison for Britain's hardest criminals, the complex's remains now serve as an open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite the prison's grim purpose, it offers a scenic setting on the water surrounded by densely forested hills. Take a walking tour to learn about the prison's history, dine at Felon's Bistro, and then conduct a paranormal investigation with ghost-hunting equipment late at night. Great tour that emphasized on the positive cultural changes in managing the prison system with a focus on rehabilitation. Idyllic settings but food options could be more varied. more »

Very cool place with tons of history. There is not a lot that small children will understand or enjoy, but it is worth the visit. There are lots of buildings to explore with dedicated talks in some of them. The guided tour and harbour cruise are part of the package and worth doing. The place is a world heritage site and is very well maintained. The infrastructure is really good, with cafes and restrooms in a couple spots within the park. A must go if you are visiting Hobart.

I haven't been here in years but love what they have done with the place. It is well signed, mixing intrigue and fact well. They have made it interactive by assigning "characters" to each entrant for them to learn about. Our tour guide Jet gave the tour in character as an Irish convict which made the your that little bit more fascinating. You can bring a lunch picnic or buy food there. Food was reasonably priced. Wear comfy shoes and dress for all 4 seasons in one day
