There are few better places to learn about Australia's penal-colony heritage than the Port Arthur Historic Site on the southeastern coast of Tasmania. Once a prison for Britain's hardest criminals, the complex's remains now serve as an open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite the prison's grim purpose, it offers a scenic setting on the water surrounded by densely forested hills. Take a walking tour to learn about the prison's history, dine at Felon's Bistro, and then conduct a paranormal investigation with ghost-hunting equipment late at night. Loved walking through the old buildings, some of them are preserved very well. They run a number of tours but we did not have time to take them all. We took the Isle of the Dead tour which was a boat ride out to a small island just off the mainland that was used as a cemetery. The tour guide was really great and shared some very interesting stories of some of the people who where buried there. We also did a ghost tour the night before which was also very well done. Port Arthur has some amazing history and I definitely want to come back some day.
Brochures and advertising can't do this site justice. It is stunningly beautiful. A boat ride and guided tour are included in the entry fee making the visit extremely enjoyable, interesting and memorable. The visitors' centre is a pleasure as well. It is architecturally beautiful and well-appointed with a cafe and restaurant.
