A well-known local attraction, Spiky Bridge is a stone bridge with an interesting convict heritage. Built in the 1840s by prisoners from the Rocky Hills Probation Station on the eastern coast of Tasmania, the bridge’s name is derived from its distinctive parapets. Some sections of the bridge were strengthened during the 1920s, and the spikes were extended to prevent local cattle from falling over the sides. Built of dry stonework, the bridge also features stone buttresses and a central channel. An information board near the bridge tells visitors all about the convict workers responsible for its construction. This local landmark is right next to the main road, so you can see and photograph it without leaving your car. Spiky Bridge reviews
Ok, so it's a bridge with spikes. Man-made mostly without cement or mortar. It's basically right next to the main road, so no inconvenience to pull in and take a few snaps. more »
If you happen to be driving this road going north to Swansea or heading down to Hobart from Freycinet this is worth stopping for. Great story at the side of the road worth 10-15 minutes of your time..... more »
