The $1.4 million establishment, located conveniently in the town centre, showcases an unlikely collection of treasured assets of the Wynyard community.
The most prestigious is the Ransley Veteran Car Collection. As a Wynyard resident, Mr Ransley shares his world class collection of locally restored Ford motor vehicles with over 40,000 visitors a year. The exhibition of over 14 vehicles includes the equal oldest Ford in the world, the 1903 Model A, which toured 58 locations around Australia covering more than 28,000kms to celebrate Ford’s centenary year in 2003.
These connections to heritage are abundant in the centre. The significant moments of Wynyard’s history are documented in The Wynyard Historical Society’s collection of references including articles dating back to 1867. Visitors can enjoy reading stories of famous explorers, Bass and Flinders, who first named Table Cape when sailing along the coast in 1798. The volcanic plug, which rises to almost 190 metres above sea level, is Wynyard’s most prominent geographical feature.
Visitors can easily find out more about these natural spectacles at the Wynyard Information Centre located within the exhibition centre. Most would agree that the best way to learn about an area is through a local. With over 40 enthusiastic and knowledegble volunteers spending time at the centre visitors can be sure of a friendly and warm welcome.
The community’s presence continues at the centre in the Wonders of Wynyard Art Gallery. Changing exhibitions showcase the work of local artists and groups including paintings, sculptures, photographs, textiles and much more.
The staff at the Wonders of Wynyard look forward to welcoming you and assisting you with all your Tasmanian travel needs.
