Featured often in some of the oldest images of the city, Maria Am Gestade represents one of Vienna's oldest and most recognizable places of worship. Consecrated in 1414, the church served as a popular spot for anglers due to its proximity to the Danube River. Today, the narrow Gothic building is best known for its ornate 56 m (180 ft) tower. Step inside to observe the imposing high altar, colorful stained glass, intricately carved statues, and 15th-century reliefs on the porticos. The grandeur and beauty of the church today make it hard to believe it once served as an arsenal and stable for Napoleon during his occupation of Vienna.
