La Chascona, Santiago

#1 of 217 in Museums in Chile
A former home away from home for the famous Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, La Chascona now serves as a museum dedicated to the artist's life and career. Even today, you can see Neruda's left-field tastes in the design of the house. The living room, made to feel like a lighthouse, and the dining room, designed like a ship's cabin, pays homage to the great poet's love of the sea. Look for the two-faced portrait of Matilde Urrutia, Neruda's fiery redheaded lover. Inspect it closely to see the hidden image of Neruda's face whispering into his forbidden lover's ear. Reserve your tickets at least a day in advance to avoid disappointment. PutLa Chascona into our Santiago trip itinerary builder and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Good to learn the history behind a great writer but the audio guide could have done more to explain his colorful political affiliations and influences. Would have also liked to get more glimpses of his literary works. Nonetheless worthwhile hour or two.
  • Beautiful house, and the audio guide really helps. You can't take photos inside, only in the gardens, and you can buy Pablo nerudas works if you want after the tour. Very chill, no guide, you go through at your own pace.
