Ming Tombs (Ming Shishan Ling), Beijing

3.3
A complex of mausoleums housing the tombs of thirteen Ming emperors, Ming Tombs (Ming Shishan Ling) represents the largest imperial burial area in China and a World Heritage Site. Carefully laid out in line with feng shui principles, the tomb area covers 120 sq km (46.3 sq mi), each mausoleum occupying an independent section. Walk along the 7 km (4 mi) route leading you into the complex, flanked by guardian statues of camels, elephants, horses, and soldiers--at the end, its impressive gate ranks among the largest stone arches in China. Explore pavilions displaying imperial seals, scrolls, robes, and other regalia, and admire a huge statue of a turtle god carrying a memorial tablet. Note that only three out of 13 tombs are open to the public. Planning Beijing trip won't be overwheling when you use's Insprock itinerary maker.

  • Clean, well maintained area. Definetly worth your time to visit here and walk down the lane with all the statues. We had a guide who explained the area in great detail. Very glad we went.  more »
  • Walking up to the Ming tombs on the radiance of the road is a quiet and enjoyable activity. Once at the graves, there are a number of houses. The graves are not so much to have, but decent tourist quietly, which can be nice. A visit here may be recommended.

  • I have wonderful memories coming here with my family when I was a teenager while Dad was assigned as Charge d'Affaires to the Philippine Embassy in Beijing from 1976 to 1978. It was an unforgettable time. I am truly blessed to have had that opportunity in my life. Thank you Mom and Dad for the beautiful life you gave us...
  • It is a nice historical place or complex. Many tombs covering a large area. There's isn't much to see and do apart from the statues and the traditional architecture. Great for photography if you're into thats. Lots of Garfield cats. Carry some water
