Drepung Monastery (Zhebang Si), Lhasa

#5 of 18 in Historic Sites in Lhasa
Enjoy a scenic path and the sight of Drepung Monastery (Zhebang Si), tumbling in three tiers from 22 m (72 ft) and then from 30 m (98 ft), respectively. Gushing out of rocky formation into a large 21 m deep (69 ft) pond, the first waterfall offers a spectacular view, which you can enjoy from a railing at a safe distance. Called the "Pond of the Emperor of Heaven," this national treasure supports a number of rare plants growing in the vicinity of the cascades--most notably solimnan reed, which makes it a national monument. The hike will take you past a picturesque red and white metal pedestrian bridge and a Buddhist temple. Bring walking shoes, bug spray, and water. • Drepung monastery is one of the three major Tibetan monasteries belonging to the Gelugpa School of Buddhism. It is located at the foot of Mount Gephel, 5 km from Lhasa. He came to have 7,700 monks, who occasionally came to the ten thousand. It was founded in 1416 by Jamyang Choge Tashi Palden, one of the main disciples of Je Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug school. It is important to visit him and see how he was burned in the invasion and so many buildings were destroyed. However maintain its greatness.

  • A grand monastery with about 700 monks. The place is situated on the hill. The mountains nearby have stone paintings visible from afar. Beautiful place.
  • Rich historical significance
