A-Ma Temple (Ma Kok Miu), Macau

Standing for more than 500 years, A-Ma Temple (Ma Kok Miu) ranks among the oldest and most significant Taoist temples in Macau. The well-preserved structure, with its tasteful decorations and crowds of devoted worshippers, was built in 1488 to honor Matsu, the goddess of fishermen and seafarers. Composed of six main parts, including a gate pavilion, a memorial arch, and multiple halls, the complex has featured in ancient Chinese texts as well as paintings depicting Macau. The temple smells very strongly of incense, a pleasant aroma for most visitors, but one that can become overpowering for some.
