Monte Forte (Fortaleza do Monte), Macau

4.1
#2 of 34 in Museums in Macau
Monte Forte (Fortaleza do Monte), part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Historic Centre of Macau, is a 17th-century structure initially built to protect locals from pirates. Since then, the attraction has also been a residence of the Governors of Macau, a weather observatory, and now houses the Macau Museum. Be sure to visit the top of the fort, which rewards you with 360-degree views of Macau's landscape. Also find the giant steel gun and ancient pagodas, once the sites of Society of Jesus. • From the old Town square, you'll find a fortress that overlooks the city of Macau. The Macau Museum is a convenient way to get on the escalator.

  • Worth the walk up the hill, even if you don't visit the museum. Looking out at this height can give you a better mental plan for exploring this fascinating city. Good photo opp with the old cannons to...  more »

  • Great vantage point of the city as well as the ruins of St-Paul. Admission is free and it’s a whole lot less crowded than the steps in front of the ruins. Great if you don’t mind going up a few stairs. This is where you will find the Macau Museum as well.
  • Situated at the top of a moderate-sized hill, the fort presents a good, but not excellent, view of Macau. There is also a museum at the top but I did not have time to visit. Just make sure you stay off the outer walls of the fort for safety, there are also guards that will blow whistles at you if you decides to take the risk.
