Trip Planner: South Pacific / Cook Islands / Southern Cook Islands / Rarotonga / Te Rua Manga (The Needle)
Challenge yourself to a climb up Te Rua Manga (The Needle), a tall rock formation jutting from a large hill. Easily visible from many spots on the island, this needle-like rock offers unbeatable views of the surrounding area. Make this trek on a well-marked walking trail to the base of the spire. Skill adventurers can choose to continue climbing up the spire, but rock-climbing equipment is needed and highly recommended. Take plenty of water, sunscreen, and mosquito repellant, and be mindfull of slippery paths, especially after heavy rainfall. Wow! A challenging but rewarding climb. Due to works on the south side we climbed the north half and went back down the same way. I wouldn't recommend going if it has been raining lots but a little... more »
It's a great walk up to the Needle, the views at the top are amazing. You will need to have a good level of fitness, wear good shoes, take plenty of water. Best to start from the township side of the track and you can either complete the whole walk and end up coming out by the abandoned Sheraton hotel, or just visit the top then come down the same way. Best to walk this track when its dry, very challenging and slippery if it's been raining. They have a tour guide that takes daily tours up the needle and he is very knowledgeable.
Went when there was a little bit of rain around. Very, very steep in sections. Wear good footwear. Amazing view at the top. Didn't climb up the rock due to the extreme wind
