Kyrenia Castle, Kyrenia

#3 of 10 in Historic Sites in Kyrenia
Built by the Venetians on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, Kyrenia Castle features dungeons with medieval torture displays and a shipwreck museum. Dating back to the 3rd-century Hellenistic and Roman periods, the site has seen much action. Serving the Byzantines in the 8th century, the Lusignans in the 13th, and the Venetians during the 15th to 16th century, the castle finally became inactive in the 1960s after hosting British and Greek police, prisoners, and soldiers for almost a century. View reconstructed underground cells where prisoners were held and tortured--nobleman and servant alike. Walk through exhibits of archeological findings, spanning from 4410 BCE to 632 CE, and see a Greek merchant shipwreck from the 4th century BCE. • Interesting but so much of the site is not really accessible if you have mobility difficulties. The site could be made more accessible and safer - take advice before you enter.  more »
  • Beautifully located by the sea, next to the small port, the well-preserved fortress rises. Climbing on walls, to look into the city or enjoy the sea, see the exhibits of the Museum, especially of the shipwrecks. Warning: they don't go down carelessly the levels in the cottages, where cistern is written on, otherwise they suddenly stand with both feet in the water. With shoes.

  • Good value at 12TL compared with anything historical to view in UK, the old shipwreck raised from the seabed has been sympathetically restored and gives a great insight into life many years ago.  more »

  • The castle of Kyrenia is amazing place. Beautiful and rich of history. The museum is the best part especially the ship wreck. I recommend to spend a lot of time here since there is many part need to be seen
  • Impressive. Beautiful views. Very interesting. Very well maintained. It is at the east end of the old harbour in Kyrenia & is a 16th-century castle built by the Venetians over a previous Crusader fortification.
  • A nice touristic place to visit with your family. You will get a feel of the old, get a nice view of the blue sea from the top of the castle. Make sure to drop by the Ship wreck museum too.
  • Fantastic views from the walls. Not a huge amount to see within the Castle but an amazing place to visit all the same. Highly recommended if you are visiting the area
  • Wonderful ruins to walk about. Some of the castle has been salvaged and rebuilt. Lots to see and learn there. Give yourself plenty of time though!
