Kyrenia Castle, Kyrenia

#3 of 10 in Historic Sites in Kyrenia
Built by the Venetians on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, Kyrenia Castle features dungeons with medieval torture displays and a shipwreck museum. Dating back to the 3rd-century Hellenistic and Roman periods, the site has seen much action. Serving the Byzantines in the 8th century, the Lusignans in the 13th, and the Venetians during the 15th to 16th century, the castle finally became inactive in the 1960s after hosting British and Greek police, prisoners, and soldiers for almost a century. View reconstructed underground cells where prisoners were held and tortured--nobleman and servant alike. Walk through exhibits of archeological findings, spanning from 4410 BCE to 632 CE, and see a Greek merchant shipwreck from the 4th century BCE. • Its a great spot for snapping quick pics! It's enjoyable to walk around and experience some of the breathtaking architecture of centuries past. It was their "art" so to speak of ancient times to erect such colossal monuments that have indeed stood the test of time. It was built in the 1500s and some may not know that there is a hidden gem of antiquity within, a Chapel 🏰built in the 1100s. The Venetians are to thank for the actual construction the castle. Assassins Creed: Blood line not only mentions, but a portion of the game includes Kyrenia, the castle, and some surrounding areas. Be sure to check out the shipwreck museum as well. Safe travels! 👋 🗺
  • Interesting historical place to visit, you get a great aerial view of the harbour. There is a shipwreck museum inside and a few other historical information. Might take an hour to explore.
  • the most historic castle on the Island also called ship wrecked. It is situated at the old harbor which is the top spot for tourist and outing. Near to castle there are too many restaurants of different foods and drinks.
  • Very nice fortress with some interesting archaeological finds in a museum inside. Best exhibit was an iron age boat hull pulled from the harbour.
  • So sad that there is garbage all over. Plastick bottles and cigaretter deep down in The castle. It could be soooo much more. My mine year was sad of the garbage....

Where to stay in Kyrenia

Northern Cyprus' most popular tourist destination offers an assortment of accommodations. It's a good idea to remain close to the beach, as this is where most of the Kyrenia's bars, restaurants, and shops are located. Transportation is somewhat lacking and unreliable; however, a bus connects the city center with beaches in the west. For a luxury stay, choose from numerous four- and five-star hotels, several of which boast seaside locations. If you're planning a longer stay, consider renting an apartment or villa.
