Kyrenia Castle, Kyrenia

#3 of 11 in Historic Sites in Kyrenia
Built by the Venetians on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, Kyrenia Castle features dungeons with medieval torture displays and a shipwreck museum. Dating back to the 3rd-century Hellenistic and Roman periods, the site has seen much action. Serving the Byzantines in the 8th century, the Lusignans in the 13th, and the Venetians during the 15th to 16th century, the castle finally became inactive in the 1960s after hosting British and Greek police, prisoners, and soldiers for almost a century. View reconstructed underground cells where prisoners were held and tortured--nobleman and servant alike. Walk through exhibits of archeological findings, spanning from 4410 BCE to 632 CE, and see a Greek merchant shipwreck from the 4th century BCE. • Interesting but so much of the site is not really accessible if you have mobility difficulties. The site could be made more accessible and safer - take advice before you enter.  more »
  • Beautifully located by the sea, next to the small port, the well-preserved fortress rises. Climbing on walls, to look into the city or enjoy the sea, see the exhibits of the Museum, especially of the shipwrecks. Warning: they don't go down carelessly the levels in the cottages, where cistern is written on, otherwise they suddenly stand with both feet in the water. With shoes.

  • Good value at 12TL compared with anything historical to view in UK, the old shipwreck raised from the seabed has been sympathetically restored and gives a great insight into life many years ago.  more »

  • This Is a medieval fortress that You need to visit! A mixture of cultures and remarkable exhibition. The ancient greek merchant ship in original condition is wonderful. If You had a chance to visit the castle don't miss it!
  • Cheap to get in and a great place to wonder around. No health and safety in here so can be unsafe in places.Stick to the lower levels if with children. There's a cafe and toilets. I would definitely go again .. loved it.
  • The castle is not big, so you need about an hour of your priceless time to observe every corner. There is a good view from the top, so supposing you like taking photos, you should plan to spend 15 additional minutes to do it. There are a few exhibitions inside, and several restaurants outside.
  • Very nice castle with good views over the city around & the sea. The prices to enter are very low. Inside the castle are some old & medieval rooms if you are passionate & interested in history.
  • Beautiful castle, we visit every time we go to TRNC, be warned though it's probably the hottest place in the world 😂 as a tourist attraction they could probably do a bit more with it.
