Built by the Venetians on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, Kyrenia Castle features dungeons with medieval torture displays and a shipwreck museum. Dating back to the 3rd-century Hellenistic and Roman periods, the site has seen much action. Serving the Byzantines in the 8th century, the Lusignans in the 13th, and the Venetians during the 15th to 16th century, the castle finally became inactive in the 1960s after hosting British and Greek police, prisoners, and soldiers for almost a century. View reconstructed underground cells where prisoners were held and tortured--nobleman and servant alike. Walk through exhibits of archeological findings, spanning from 4410 BCE to 632 CE, and see a Greek merchant shipwreck from the 4th century BCE. • Huge, imposing castle on the seafront which also has a shipwreck museum inside. As well as the exhibits to see you can climb up and walk along the walls to the sound of waves hitting the rocks...

  • Interesting restored castle. Shipwreck museum was fascinating, a 2300 old boat and cargo. Bathroom costs 2 or 3 L to use.
  • Really nice castle. Entry is 20 Turkish Lira. Views are great and worth it for the preserved shipwreck - quite amazing. Only bad thing is they are charging 2 lira for the toilet which should be free since the entry ticket is already 20 lira.
