Saint Hilarion Castle, Kyrenia

4.8
Nestled high in the rocky mountain tops overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the ruins of Saint Hilarion Castle feature crumbling walls, Byzantine ornaments, and 100 km (60 mi) views. Although the exact construction date is unknown, the castle and a former monastery are estimated to be about 1,000 years old. Serving as a royal home with economic units, stables, and military quarters, the site survived until the Venetian arrival in the 15th century, when it was dismantled. You'll discover dark, mysterious tunnels and preserved church elements here. Don't miss the arch overlooking the sea, which makes a great photo spot. • Quite a climb from the car park at the base of the peak - takes about 25 minutes if you're fairly fit. Steps are not really smooth, and a bit rough in places. Several places to stop and admire the vie...  more »
  • It is one of the most impressive castles in Cyprus! It is a must when you visit the island. Worth climbing the south cliff (only way) to enjoy the place and the excellent view. It is just a shame that...  more »
  • A steep and slippery stairway leads you to splendid views of the bay and Kyrenia. Don't miss this. It's great.  more »

  • Breathtakingly stunning views from the castle. I can see why they say Walt Disney looked at Saint Hellion and gave him the idea for his castle in the Magic Kingdom. Magical! Lots of steps though, need sensible footwear. Only £2 to go up, café and toilets. Well worth a visit.
  • The castle is about 5km from the main road, and you can only pass through past the military point on a motorcycle or car, they don’t allow bicycles or walking. You need at least two hours to explore most of it. Lots of climbing but the view is totally worth it! You need hiking footwear and carry water! There are toilets and a cafe at the entrance. There is also parking space. It’s not a guided tour and the guide map issued didn’t give us sufficient information.
  • Well worth the long hike up to the top. Marvellous views over Kyrenia.
  • It's a nice place to visit however you must have good hiking boots some of the tracks are really Rocky not suitable for elderly or people are not good with heights but other than that nice views of north Cyprus
  • Super view on Kyrenia district, crazy castle and ruins on the top of the hill! It was nice morning walk! Entry cost 9TL!

Where to stay in Kyrenia

Northern Cyprus' most popular tourist destination offers an assortment of accommodations. It's a good idea to remain close to the beach, as this is where most of the Kyrenia's bars, restaurants, and shops are located. Transportation is somewhat lacking and unreliable; however, a bus connects the city center with beaches in the west. For a luxury stay, choose from numerous four- and five-star hotels, several of which boast seaside locations. If you're planning a longer stay, consider renting an apartment or villa.
