Kolossi Castle, Limassol

4.0
The robust cubical Kolossi Castle represents a Gothic military structure of the Middle Ages, with a Luisignan coat of arms carved into its walls. Originally built around 1210, the exact edifice that you can see today was completed in 1454. Some of the 13th-century fragments are still at the site. Standing 21 m (69 ft) tall, the castle contains storerooms at the ground floor, a kitchen on the second floor, and living quarters in the upper section. At one time the complex also featured sugarcane production facilities. Look south to see a courtyard building and ruins of what's thought to have been a stable or storehouse. • The children (ages 10, 8 and 7) enjoyed running around and exploring the castle. €2.50 per adult ans children were free, so good value. Lovely beach and restaurants nearby to make a day of it.  more »
  • Kolossi Castle is located about fifteen kilometres from the centre of Limassol near the base border and is a beautiful square fortress built by the Hospitals. Inside only the two rooms and a staircase to climb to the top from where you can enjoy a beautiful view among the blackbirds. Outside some coats of arms and a group of caditoias carved above the raised door. Nice property worth the short visit.

  • Nice historical place to visit not to far from Limassol town. There is lots of parking here and there is a little cafe outside to get a drink and snack. An hour here is plenty of time. Its interesting but could do with more information available to help you understand about the history of the castle. Hence the 3 star review. If you have any mobility issues don't bother going here. There are 70 steps from the bottom to the top of a narrow spiral staircase. The view from the top is amazing, worth walking up all those stairs.
  • An impressive piece of Western european style military architecture. A tower that looks similar to Norman keeps as you can see them in France and England, but from a later period. Quiet shady garden around it and the remnants of a medieval sugar cane crushing mill.
