Tucked up into a mountain, Agios Neophytos Monastery features frescoes, icons, and exhibits of religious items, like manuscripts, priestly garments, books, pottery, and maps. Founded by Cypriot monk and writer Neophytos in 1159, the monastery also includes a church built 200 years later that was dedicated to Virgin Mary. See the cave with Neophytos's cell, his rock-table, stone bed, and his grave. Don't miss the enclosure that he carved into the mountain, which contains Byzantine frescoes dating back to the 12th century. Монастырь примечателен сохранными фресками 12 столетия классического греческого письма, написанных при жизни основателя монастыря-Неофита Затворника. Воздух в монастыре необыкновенный, хочется дышать ... more »The monastery is notable for the preserved frescoes of the 12th century of classical Greek writing, written during the life of the founder of the Monastery-Neophyte Recluse. The air in the monastery is extraordinary, you want to breathe and breathe. The iconostasis of the main temple is also worthy of a separate attention - it consists of quite ancient icons of Greek writing, looks like something very ancient and namoworthy. My daughter was very interested to see how the elder Neophyte lived. So with the kids you even have to go there.
Beautiful serene setting with lovely grounds and lots of history. Lovely cafe on the grounds that do the best iced coffees amongst other things. Wear comfy shoes and ladies perhaps cover your shoulders, if not some overcoats/dusters/robes are available.
A very nicely presented and functional Monastery. It presents its history very well and is very easy to get around. A nice visit with the children and their grandparents.
