Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery, Paphos

4.5
See Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery with its own winery, featuring vividly colored orthodox frescoes and collections of priceless relics and icons. According to legend, a local monk came across a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary painted by Luke the Evangelist that was washed out to sea; he collected it and dedicated this monastery to the icon in 1152. The present building, which dates to 1770, hosts an important Cypriot religious ceremony and holds fine vintage wine. View a gold- and silver-plated icon of the Virgin Mary at the gallery, and browse through Byzantine and post-Byzantine collections. You'll also find a rustic cafe on site. • This is one of the many small monasteries in the Troodos mountains, easy going, The monks may offer you fresh figs and unfortunately we only learned later that the wine they make is award winning and ...  more »
  • Were in this monastery as part of the tour Grand Tour from the Bible Globe, we were told about the history of the monastery, candles can be taken for free, if you wish you can leave a coin, another. Candles and for health and for rest put in one place. We bought cherry liqueur there for 6 euros, it was packed in a cardboard box. You can take beautiful photos inside the yard and next to the monastery, as it is in the mountains. You can't take pictures inside the church!

  • Lovely small monastery in the hills. No entry fee and a Bar / cafe outside for a cool drink and a snack with views across the valley. Recommended
  • Interesting quiet place. You can understand the nature and the history of Cyprus visiting this great place. You can also buy local wine which is really good and for reasonable price. Also visit cafeteria with great view.
