Saint Paul's Pillar, Paphos

#19 of 198 in Things to do in Paphos
Landmark · Tourist Spot
Saint Paul's Pillar is where Saint Paul was tied and whipped as a punishment for an act of evangelizing, according to legend. The belief is that Barnabas and Paul, apostles of Jesus Christ, headed to Cyprus to teach the inhabitants the ways of Christianity. However, they faced fierce opposition from the civic leader Elymas--attendant to the governor appointed by Rome--which resulted in the scourging of Paul five times, each entailing 39 lashes. See the pillar where Paul was allegedly beaten, which many consider an important pilgrimage stop.
