Abu Simbel Temple Complex, Abu Simbel

The power of one of the most iconic pharaohs remains evident at Abu Simbel Temple Complex, a pair of colossal temples forming part of a World Heritage Site. Consisting of the Great Temple and the Small Temple, the complex was built during the reign of Ramses II in the 13th century BCE. The complex was meant to honor the gods and, in no small part, Ramses himself. Several colossi of the long-ruling pharaoh represent highlights of the temple complex, which was entirely relocated in 1968 to prevent damage by the construction of an artificial lake.
