Viru Square, Tallinn

#28 of 345 in Things to do in Tallinn
Must see · Landmark · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Walk through Viru Square and take a step back in time. Built in the 14th century, the gate's twin towers were once part of a complex fortification system that protected the bustling trading heart of Tallinn. Most of the walls are gone, but the towers stand as a proud monument to the city's history and mark a gateway between its modern center and the old town. In the vicinity of the gate is a great selection of cafes, restaurants, and shops where you can buy souvenirs. When flowers are in bloom, colorful stalls full of them add a special touch to the gate. The gate is a great starting point for a tour of the historic center of Tallinn on foot or by catching a romantic ride on a horse-drawn carriage. • It was forbidden to visit Tallinn. In December 2020 we managed and went to the Squares. We also made some shopping.  more »
  • This is the best part of the city for tourists as the old architecture has been preserved and it is full of charm. You will find lots of cafes here, good places to sit and enjoy the scene.  more »
