Among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps, the ruins of Schloss Heidelberg offer sweeping views of the surrounding area. The castle has been partially rebuilt since lightning bolts and fires caused massive destruction in the 17th and 18th centuries. It dominates the view of the old downtown, just as it did in the 13th century. Sitting on a hillside above the city, the castle can be easily reached by a funicular railway, itself a major regional tourist attraction. Be sure to pick up an audio guide near the entrance into the castle. To access interior areas not available otherwise, join a guided tour of the castle and its grounds. Schloss Heidelberg Reviews
We had been into the castle before, which was fascinating and so we walked up early evening to take some night photos. It was such an amazing view, especially with the Christmas market lights. Always.... more »
Even if you do not pay the fee to go inside this is a great place to walk to and to see the views of the city below. Lovely grounds and worth a visit. more »
Truly a must-see on your trip to Heidelberg. The castle has a long, rich history with sprawling grounds that overlook the city of Heidelberg. Strongly recommend the inside tour to learn more about the history of the castle which was abandoned and later rebuilt by a passionate French Count. You'll find countless intriguing discoveries at the castle. A special treat at the end of your tour is the giant wine barrel and wine tasting! Hungry? Also recommend a delightful Bratwurst at the castle if you can't afford to eat at the posh restaurant inside the castle grounds.
Beautiful castle. Definitely worth a visit. If you do not go on a tour you can’t see the inside. I would recommend going on the tour. It was informative to hear about the history of the castle.
