Burg Eltz, Wierschem

Owned by the same family who began its construction nearly 850 years ago, Burg Eltz is one of the best-preserved castles in Germany. The ornate, fairy tale-like fortress sits atop a 70 m (230 ft) rock outcropping. It's built of imposing stone walls and topped with colorful, spire-like roofs. You can explore more than 100 different rooms and courtyards, including the family quarters still used today. Climb to the other sections of the structure to see sweeping views of the forested hills and river valleys. Check the website for special events and guided tours. • A must for those who of (medieval) history and architecture. For the whole family. In the courtyard of the castle can also be good food!

  • Parking costs 2 euro. If you go directly from the parking lot, on the paved road (when it rains very slippery, a woman in front of me fell even...), you can see the Castle from the top. She is very beautiful from any angle! There's also a just slightly uphill walk through the forest. Very nice, duration of approximately 15 minutes. From the parking lot driving a shuttle bus directly to the Castle. The entrance for 1 person for the leadership with access to the inner rooms will cost 10 euros. Management very interesting and worth seeing! Starts about every 15 minutes, there is also a shop and two catering venues. There is always big crowds, still worth a visit!

  • So much history and fun facts. It's just amazing that it was not destroyed during world war and is still owned by 33rd generation of Germany family. Loved how you can have the hill view and then though can climb down to the castle. The tour guide was very helpful explaining the history about the castle in English. I would definitely recommend it to anyone if they can while traveling around this area. Worth the money and time.
  • We had a great tour of this ancient place. Our guide answered all our questions. The treasury room was very interesting as well. There's a snack bar on the main level and a restaurant on the lower level ( which we didn't see until after we had eaten at the snack bar). The hot dog was satisfying though. The hike there was good. Coming back was up hill and a little more tiring. But the trails are well maintained. You can take the shuttle back if you prefer, for a few €. A very good day. I would recommend going.
