Alte Mainbruecke, Wurzburg

4.7
Constructed between the 15th and 16th centuries, Alte Mainbruecke serves as one of Wurzburg's iconic landmarks. The 185 m (607 ft) arched causeway spans the river Main in the heart of the old city. In the distance, you'll spy the town's spires on one side and the Marienburg Fortress on the other. The 12 detailed, sandstone statues of saints adorning the length of the bridge were added during the Baroque era. The structure was partially destroyed by retreating German troops in 1945. Its faithful reconstruction used materials from a nearby quarry. Use our Wurzburg day trip site to add Alte Mainbruecke and other attractions to your Wurzburg vacation plans.

  • Mandatory visit to try to understand what life was like in the middle ages. It overlooks the fortress of Marienburg and is close to the Residenz. in the early part of the bridge there is small bars and restaurants that sell the regional wine in bowls to drink on the bridge, which is a tradition.

  • The old main bridge in Würzburg is the most beautiful of all main bridges I've seen from Bayreuth to Mainz.

  • Pedestrian and bicycle only bridge is a great place to hang out and watch the river, the city, and people during the day and evening. It is also used as a convenient place to eat and drink. Scattered along the bridge are eight statues of prominent local leaders from several hundred years ago.
  • On a sunny Sunday the best place to be. There is a small tavern at the entrance of the bridge where u can get wine and then sit outside on the edges of the bridge. This is beautiful and a lively place to watch people and enjoy the good weather.
  • Great view and a fun place to visit. There are a few bars and restaurants at the city end of the bridge, where you can buy a glass of wine to enjoy on the bridge.
  • Very nice place ,mostly German people are coming from near cities in the weekend to drink wine and beer on the brige .there are wine yards around castle and one type of these wines is made from these grapes .apple wine has different taste.
  • One of the most amazing places in Würzburg! Firstly it's one of the most beautiful sights. It's also popular among the locals as it's a perfect place for meeting, chatting and walking. So don't forget to buy a glass of wine at the spot in the beginning of the bridge, have a walk in a nice company and feel the atmosphere of the place!
