Alte Mainbruecke, Wurzburg

4.7
Constructed between the 15th and 16th centuries, Alte Mainbruecke serves as one of Wurzburg's iconic landmarks. The 185 m (607 ft) arched causeway spans the river Main in the heart of the old city. In the distance, you'll spy the town's spires on one side and the Marienburg Fortress on the other. The 12 detailed, sandstone statues of saints adorning the length of the bridge were added during the Baroque era. The structure was partially destroyed by retreating German troops in 1945. Its faithful reconstruction used materials from a nearby quarry. Use our Wurzburg day trip site to add Alte Mainbruecke and other attractions to your Wurzburg vacation plans.

  • The old main bridge in Würzburg is a must for all guests of Würzburg. From here, you have great views of the fortress, the Kahn, the stone castle, the Town Hall, the Cathedral and all surrounding vineyards of Würzburg. The highlight on the main bridge is the bridge reading, which is served by three stations on the ramp.

  • The mood on the bridge has liked us very much. Many people would all played with glass in hand (drinks there at the restaurants out of the window), music. Really very nice!

  • From there one has a beautiful view on the fortress and the main. Also, you can find there interesting people.

  • I have been to this bridge twice now and both times were highly enjoyable for three main reasons: 1. The bridge has a lot of historic significance. It was completed in the 16th century and includes statues of key figures relevant to Würzburg's history. Unfortunately, large parts of it were destroyed in WWII and it had to be rebuilt; however, don't let this deter you from visiting - the beauty of the bridge and its medieval nature are well-replicated and preserved. 2. You will see an amazing view of the Fortress Marienburg. Photo included. 3. You can buy local wine, as well as mixed wine drinks, on the bridge. On summer afternoons, you will see many people enjoying a glass of wine in the sunshine while taking in the view. Granted, you can buy the wine for cheaper prices elsewhere, but even here the prices are not unreasonable - and the experience is worth it.
  • A real great place to visit in Würzburg. A Landmark, where you can see the Catedral and the Marian Castle of the opposite side. “Brückenschoppen” is wine culture, cold white wine that you can enjoy on the bridge. Remember, the bridge is also free for bike rider, so please give the space to move. Sometimes, there are plenty street musician made their attraction there. It is very recommended to visit!
  • Excellent atmosphere for a bridge! Just order a glass of wine and enjoy the view with your company.
  • One of my favorite places in Wuerzburg. Make sure you make it back there at night!
  • It is a short bridge. Many people drink Riesling on the bridge. Enjoy the night view on this bridge in the evening. This is one of the hot places in Würzburg.
