Trip Planner: Europe / Germany / Bavaria / Franconia / Lower Franconia / Wurzburg / Würzburg Residence
See the world's largest ceiling fresco at Würzburg Residence, the majestic residence of the prince-bishops of Würzburg. Constructed in the early 18th century, the palace combines aspects of French chateau and Viennese Baroque architecture. The fresco is above the palace's grand royal staircase. You can wander through the Imperial Hall with its stucco sculptures, colorful murals, and gold ornamentation. Although you must pay to enter the palace, you can roam the tranquil residence gardens free of charge. This site is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Würzburg Residence Reviews
For the price paid, easily worth it. I recommend getting the ticket for the Residenz and the Treasury. You will need half a day for this attraction if you plan on listening to all the audio prompts... more »
Pay to enter this UNESCO site but worth it. The fresco ceiling above the staircase is amazing as is the halls with all the stucco - I'd never seen anything like it before. Lots of "wow" moments. more »
The residence was one fantastic afternoon of beautiful frescoes and a great guide that was very informative and entertaining. I thought that the gift shop was over priced but the clerk was very helpful. As a handicapped person i was very appreciative of the availability of the elevator, as i couldn't handle the stairs.
Stunning palace. Definitely suggested the guided tour to see some of its internal space. Really well organized and with very interesting explanation. Not allowed to take pictures inside the palace. After the tour, it's possible to visit the gardens of the palace. Amazing gardens with tons of flowers around. Very good place for taking some pictures.
