See the Rock's most famous inhabitants, Barbary macaques, at Apes Den. This small population of the only free-roaming primates in Europe came from North Africa long before the British did. Still, somehow a popular local legend has it that these two groups, if they ever leave, will leave together. These tailless monkeys (not apes) like to interact with humans, although they can be dangerous if irritated or scared. Used to being fed by people, the monkeys will use any opportunity to snatch food from your hands or open bags, so keep your belongings close. Apes Den reviews

Stopped by Apes Den while visiting the Rock of Gibraltar on two separate days and there were only one or two apes around - there were many more at the skywalk and on the walls. Disappointing but that.... more »
One of the highlights of my journey to Gibraltar. I suggest taking a small bus tour up because it gives you the best bang for your buck. The monkeys are very calm, very use to the people and will do tricks for some of the tour guides that they are familiar with. It’s important to remember not to feed the monkeys yourself, and don’t reach out to pet or touch them because they will bite you.
There was a beautiful view. We got there by minibus. It was worth it for that money. A driver told us about Gibraltar and monkeys. We could feed them. It was amazing experience.
