The Great Siege Tunnels, Gibraltar

#1 of 21 in Historic Sites in Gibraltar
Historic Site · Tourist Spot
A pivotal factor in the British victory against the French and Spanish attempt to overtake Gibraltar, The Great Siege Tunnels house a small exhibit dedicated to this event. The tunnels were dug by hand--with a sledgehammer, a crowbar, and some gunpowder--out of the limestone rock between 1779 and 1783. The holes for the cannon guns were originally opened with another purpose (as air-vents), but their potential was immediately recognized and tunnels soon became gun emplacements. See some of the original Victorian arms as well as dioramas depicting miners at work and soldiers under the siege. • This was a great place to visit especially when it is throwing it down with rain outside. This is quite a trek once you get inside. The tunnels are relatively flat near the entrance and then about a third of the way in, slope downwards to some degree. There is a sign warning you at this point and it is worth saying it is a significant trek back up again if you do go further on. The displays are good with relevant information. Worth a trip even though it is quite expensive for the entrance package (park plus features).
  • Very beautiful view from top the castle. You can have a nice walking through the old buildings and take a nice photos of the city view from the top.
