Galway Cathedral, Galway

#2 of 15 in Historic Sites in Galway
Tour Galway Cathedral, one of the most architecturally notable buildings in the city. Built in 1958 on the grounds of a former prison, the site is officially named Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and Saint Nicholas. Admire the Renaissance-style dome and pillars, along with the church's rose windows and intricate mosaics. The dome, at 44.2 m (145 ft), can be seen on Galway's skyline. Visit for Mass, held every day, to listen to the organ play and choir sing. Work out when and for how long to visit Galway Cathedral and other Galway attractions using our handy Galway tour planner.

  • Wonderful the façade of the cathedral. Unfortunately, although I read comments to visit her, I didn't have the pleasure of meeting her inside because it was already closed.

  • Relatively new building compared to other religious buildings. You go inside and you get into the realm of stone. Grey rough stone, huge vaults, spacious so that even with large groups of tourists all were able to pass freely, without disturbing anyone. You can walk and read how you created - there is a stand with a detailed description of the stages of construction. You can sit and admire all the details of the decoration. You can't leave quickly because you can't come off. Interestingly looks the dome inside, it is illuminated in pink, from which the cathedral looks even more elegant. I've never seen such cathedrals before, I don't look like anything like that.

  • The cathedral is a beautiful, quiet, reflective place. Its interesting history is well-explained by a series of displays. They don't allow visits during services (obviously) but if you are in Galway this is definitely worth a visit. Take time to pause and appreciate the place
  • Nice Cathedral. Free admission, (2€ voluntary). It's made of materials from all over the world. There are a few interesting mosaics. Stones and marbles enormous. Gift shop inside with a wide range of religious stuff.
