Tread the path of the lowly prisoner at Abashiri Prison Museum, depicting the lives of Japanese convicts and jailers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Constructed in 1890, the prison sprawls over 22 buildings of cells, sleeping quarters, and work houses. Submerge yourself into the day-to-day life of a prisoner, from the solitary confinement and law court, to the miso and soy agricultural areas for which the prison became known. Rest your feet at the museum restaurant, where you can sit down to a meal called the "Prisoner's Lunch." • With jpy100 we bought a little stamp booklet for our kids to do tracking and collecting stamps. A well organised museum with interesting demonstration with those wax figures. They look so real in the ...  more »
  • I think that the doll of the person who put the tattoo is real, and the child person is good. The park was very large and took two hours. People imprisoned as disposable labor force in order to make the road of the remote area. Local residents who accepted the people and sometimes thanked them. It is made to think about variousthings.

  • The prison museum is definitely worth a visit if you come to Abashiri. Through this museum, I understand more about the early development and history of Hokkaido and how those notorious felons who ever served their sentence here contributed to the early settlement and development of Hokkaido. They are sinners on one hand but heroes on the other hand.
  • Amazing museum - great displays (not all are in English but we felt absolutely satisfied with the amount of information), beautiful location and design, very useful orientation map... they also show two short explanatory films which are really insightful. Don’t miss out on this!
