Lake Shikotsu, Chitose

4.2
Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, Lake Shikotsu represents one of Japan's deepest bodies of water, offering fine views of a still-active volcano. Formed some 30,000 years ago, the caldera doesn't freeze in the winter, despite the cold northern climate. The eastern shore features hotels and hot spring resorts for tourists, while a nearby canyon shelters rich plant life and over twenty types of moss viewable from an observation deck--an ideal destination for nature lovers. Stroll around the lake's rim or hike up the volcano and enjoy the views over the deserted crater landscape and the glimmering water. • On the day of the blast, the visitor center side was mysterious with the waves of Zabuzab, and the autumn leaves were over, but the drive along the lakeside is recommended.

  • The lake is not frozen often and plants and leaves don't rot. It is worth to see. Noted on wonder-tips.
  • Calm and peaceful location for those if you that prefer the zen feel rather than a beach resort. It is a place suitable for all weather and season. My favourite are Winter - although cold, but the lake is surrounded by white land covered in snow. If you come in the right time, you also get to enjoy the blue/ice festival that lights up throughout the day. Autumn - the land is covered by the red, orange and yellow flavour of the season.
