Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, Lake Shikotsu represents one of Japan's deepest bodies of water, offering fine views of a still-active volcano. Formed some 30,000 years ago, the caldera doesn't freeze in the winter, despite the cold northern climate. The eastern shore features hotels and hot spring resorts for tourists, while a nearby canyon shelters rich plant life and over twenty types of moss viewable from an observation deck--an ideal destination for nature lovers. Stroll around the lake's rim or hike up the volcano and enjoy the views over the deserted crater landscape and the glimmering water. 北海道の湖だけあってとても水がきれいです。 実際に行ってみると思っていた以上に大きくて驚きました 冬は氷や雪でイベントがあるようでおそらくまったく違う景色になると思います。 more »There is only a lake in Hokkaido, and the water is very beautiful. I was surprised to see more than I thought when I actually went there, and i think that there will be an event with ice and snow in winter, and it will probably be a completely different scenery.
The lake is not frozen often and plants and leaves don't rot. It is worth to see. Noted on wonder-tips.
Calm and peaceful location for those if you that prefer the zen feel rather than a beach resort. It is a place suitable for all weather and season. My favourite are Winter - although cold, but the lake is surrounded by white land covered in snow. If you come in the right time, you also get to enjoy the blue/ice festival that lights up throughout the day. Autumn - the land is covered by the red, orange and yellow flavour of the season.
