Goryokaku Park, Hakodate

#1 of 58 in Historic Sites in Hakodate
Must see · Architectural Building · Park
Visit the historic site of Goryokaku Park, a former fortress in the shape of a five-pointed star. Built in the 1850s, the fort owes its curious shape to Ayasaburo Takeda, who designed it to optimize defence and gun placement. Roam the fort complex, a public park since 1914, and take a relaxing walk along the moat, lined with lush cherry blossom trees. Climb to the top of the 100 m (328 ft) tall observation tower to enjoy panoramic views of the fort and its surroundings.
