Hakodate Orthodox Church, Hakodate
The Holy Resurrection Church of Hakodate, or Hakodate Orthodox Church, is Japan’s oldest Russian-style Orthodox Church, featuring a modernized Byzantine exterior. Founded in 1859 by the Russian consulate and consecrated by the future St. Nicholas of Japan, the church stands as a testimony to Russo-Japanese political and trade ties during the 19th century. Built on Hachiman-zaka slope near Motomachi Park, the church offers a great view of Hakodate city. Locals nicknamed the church a “ding-dong temple” after the sound of its bells. You cannot enter when church services are in progress. Put Hakodate Orthodox Church and other Hakodate attractions into our Hakodate online travel planner , and watch your holiday take shape.
Hakodate Orthodox Church Reviews
more »I visited The Church of Christ in Sendai, the water of tea, but Hakodate Christ is the oldest in history, located in the center of motomachi, and the buildings and gardens are wonderful. There is a common atmosphere, and there is a very sense of intimacy. I want to visit again by all means.
Aller du centre ville à ce quartier situé sur les hauteurs de Hakodate est pour le moins exténuant, mais on y voit de belles maisons, de belles églises. C'est calme, on se promène tranquillement. It's quiet, we walk around quietly. It is hard to believe in Japan, architecture has nothing to do with it. In front of this beautiful church, I grew up in Tallinn, Estonia. The ride is worth the physical effort. The cable car is not far away, nor is the Anglican Church (modern and uninteresting). Count a good hour in this chic and friendly neighborhood. Luckily the bus picked us up and brought us back to the city centre afterwards!
Very beautiful and unique building It is 10 minutes from the Hakodate mountain ropeway. Built in 1916, is known as a representation of western-style buildings in Hakodate It once burned down in a fire in 1907 and was rebuilt in 1916 The Hakodate Orthodox Church is one of the city's most famous historical buildings and it was the first Russian Orthodox church to be built in Japan It was the fifth bell to be chosen for the best sound in Japan. It rings about three to five times every Saturday from 5:00 pm and every Sunday's morning during the prayer
Beautiful and peaceful place. When you got spare time in Hakodate, you can stroll around there.
