Hakodate Orthodox Church, Hakodate

4.0
The Holy Resurrection Church of Hakodate, or Hakodate Orthodox Church, is Japan’s oldest Russian-style Orthodox Church, featuring a modernized Byzantine exterior. Founded in 1859 by the Russian consulate and consecrated by the future St. Nicholas of Japan, the church stands as a testimony to Russo-Japanese political and trade ties during the 19th century. Built on Hachiman-zaka slope near Motomachi Park, the church offers a great view of Hakodate city. Locals nicknamed the church a “ding-dong temple” after the sound of its bells. You cannot enter when church services are in progress. Put Hakodate Orthodox Church and other Hakodate attractions into our Hakodate online travel planner , and watch your holiday take shape.

  • I visited The Church of Christ in Sendai, the water of tea, but Hakodate Christ is the oldest in history, located in the center of motomachi, and the buildings and gardens are wonderful. There is a common atmosphere, and there is a very sense of intimacy. I want to visit again by all means.

  • Going from the city centre to this area on the heights of Hakodate is exhausting to say the least, but you can see beautiful houses, beautiful churches. It's quiet, we walk around quietly. It is hard to believe in Japan, architecture has nothing to do with it. In front of this beautiful church, I grew up in Tallinn, Estonia. The ride is worth the physical effort. The cable car is not far away, nor is the Anglican Church (modern and uninteresting). Count a good hour in this chic and friendly neighborhood. Luckily the bus picked us up and brought us back to the city centre afterwards!
