Buried Shrine Gate, Kagoshima

3.8
Imagine the sheer force of nature at Buried Shrine Gate, an entrance to a Shinto temple buried 2 m (6 ft) under volcanic ash for over a century. The powerful eruption of Mount Sakura in 1914 catapulted ash and pumice 7 km (4.5 mi) into the air, creating a 2 m (6.6 ft) high ash deposit in a single night, and leaving only 1 m (3.3 ft) of the gate still visible above the ground. The lava also covered an entire village of 687 houses, whose roofs stayed visible above the ground. • It seems to be a torii that was buried leaving the upper 1m in the eruption of Taisho. The islanders thought about reviving the shrine, but the village chief at the time left the threat of the eruption to future generations, so they left it as it was. When I see this figure, I can feel that the idea of the village mayor was correct.

  • We drove north from "Namitorii" and entered Sakurajima. The place where I stopped by was the "Kurokami Buried Torii" of The Goi-Gosha Shrine (Kurokami Shrine). The volcanic ash caused by the eruption, buried only about 1m above the torii on the ground, is breathtaking. According to the guide, it was originally a torii that was 3 m high, but when it erupted in 1914, it was buried in volcanic ash in just one day. I think that the power of the eruption at that time might have been the one which exceeded the imagination when this torii which had been buried far lower than my height was actually seen. In addition, when i went to the back by the side of this torii, the shrine was enshrined. It is probably a newly built shrine with volcanic ash piled up. We quietly joined hands and visited the shrine.
