Take a relaxing stroll through Sengan-en Garden, a scenic Japanese-style garden that forms part of a World Heritage Site. Built in 1658 as a private residence for the Shimazu Clan, the gardens are renowned for offering postcard-like views of the majestic Mt. Sakurajima in the background. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere as you roam the luscious landscape, sprinkled with ponds, picturesque stone bridges, bamboo groves, and an array of seasonal trees and plants. For an additional fee, you can take a short tour of the Iso villa, reconstructed in the 19th century. It's a nice walk in the garden and although it has a rich history, the toilets are very nice and new (that's important too right?). The kids didn't enjoy it so much here but they do have an activity for them where they can collect stamps at different locations (we asked the lady who gave us the activity sheet to point out on the map where the stamps were!) and then exchange it for a small souvenir.
Lovely and relaxing gardens to walk around, even in winter. There are excellent portrait spots within nature. Stop for lunch or a cup of tea. Souvenirs are available here.
