Hase-dera Temple, Kamakura

Known for its eleven-headed statue of a bodhisattva associated with mercy, Hase-dera Temple probably dates back to the 8th century CE. Though several documents indicate that the temple may have been established later, local lore maintains the site's earlier origins. Explore the onsite museum (for an additional cost), take in the coastal views of Kamakura, and enjoy the lush temple garden. Most importantly, be sure to view the wooden sculpture of bodhisattva Kannon, which, as legend has it, was carved from a camphor tree in 721.
