Yamato Museum, Kure

4.3
Visit Yamato Museum to learn about the "history of Kure"--the modern Japanese history after the Meiji Era--as well as Japan's shipbuilding technology and iron industry. Opened in 2005, the museum's pride remains its 1/10 scale model of the battleship Yamato. Head further along to see other artifacts like a Zero fighter plane Type 62, manned World War II torpedoes and suicide crafts, and a midget submersible research vehicle of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The parking lot usually has enough space for visitors. Take a look at our Kure road trip website to schedule your visit to Yamato Museum and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • If you are into ships & I must say VERY LARGE SHIPS, this is a MUST-see. It has everything from ships, to planes to even submarines. I LOVED this place so much, I went back for a second day.  more »
  • I was impressed at the scale model of the Yamato. Now I devote grief and just see the Pacific military history exhibit, I couldn't say.

  • Good for ¥500 but difficult to follow in depth if you don’t speak or read Japanese (which is not a criticism!). This museum is an interesting look at the impact of military ship building in WWII and after on Kure. In particular the museum centres on the construction and wreck of the Yamato ship. There are some descriptions in English, but the meaty stuff I’m sure was in the more detailed Japanese descriptions and videos. Left me wanting to know more. Super hour or so, around a 30-45 minute journey from Hiroshima by train or hydrofoil.
  • I was surprised to find this so interesting, as I’m not so into warships, but this museum was just as much about local history, which was really informative and a good accompaniment to the Hiroshima memorials. They have a great app with English, Chinese and Korean audio commentary, a well-stocked gift shop, and friendly, helpful staff.
