Arashiyama, Kyoto

4.3
#5 of 1,419 in Things to do in Kyoto
For centuries a source of respite and escape, Arashiyama offers a glimpse of natural beauty outside of Kyoto. The district has a variety of outdoor activities: visit the Japanese macaques in the monkey park, or take a rowboat out onto the lake. Don't miss the bamboo grove, a gentle uphill trail through densely packed stalks, ending at a historic imperial villa and its surrounding landscaped gardens. • Be sure to walk along the main tourist street, admire the views from the bridge, visit monkey park and Bamboo Forest. There are many temples, there is an opportunity to climb the trail to Mount Arashiyama, which offers stunning views of Kyoto. But the Museum of the Owls and there is also a museum of cats on the main street do not advise to visit. Owls are fastened with a lock to the branch on which they sit. I feel sorry for them. There were no visitors, few people want to see birds in captivity, and even in such unbearable conditions. The Cats were not impressed either. We wished we'd gone in there. That's the only thing that upset us in Arashiam. Everything else is amazing and impressive. No wonder this place inspired many poets and artists. They left with the thought of coming back here someday.

  • We went back twice. Only 25 minutes from Kyoto by bus. There is so much to see, but also a great place to relax. You can visit the bamboo forest and the monkey's. Don't forget the cat cafe (Bengal Cat...  more »

  • The most beautiful spot is not at the beginning of the path, but further away past Tenryuji Temple entrance, where bamboo groves grow further apart from each other, allowing it to become thick and beautiful. You can rent a bike, take a rickshaw ride or stroll the path (it will cost you nothing— just prepare yourself and your camera) to enjoy the beautiful sight
  • A great place to visit, filled with many beautiful old temples, serene lakes, gentle flowing rivers and multiple colored trees. Beautiful landscape and atmosphere - to relax and to enjoy. Lots of walking needed but in the very refreshing environment! A photographer's haven, with arresting landscape and portrait shots expected.
