#1 of 211 in Things to do in Nara
A World Heritage Site dating back to 728 CE, Todai-ji Temple has served as a central Buddhist temple complex known for its administrative control over provincial temples. Today, it remains a pilgrimage and ritual site for international Buddhism. The main hall, a massive wooden building, contains a 15 m (49.2 ft) bronze statue of the Buddha flanked by bodhisattvas. Check out the onsite museum, which features rotating displays of the temple's collection of religious art and cultural artifacts. Try not to scare the deer roaming the temple grounds, as Shintoism considers them godly messengers. Planning Nara trip won't be overwheling when you use's Insprock itinerary maker.

  • Big Buddha are impressive. Nostrils seems to be 30 cm in diameter, but seen from a distance so great, can't really imagine.

  • Truly a difficult to describe experience. The pictures cannot do the scale of this building justice. The Goodwill Ambassador docent did a good job explaining the different iterations of both the temple and the Buddha statue. If you have some time to spend here it may be worthwhile to ask how to get permission to walk the main platform. There were signs stating you needed previous authorization.
  • In my short stint in Japan, I visited temples and shrines in Osaka, Kyoto and Nara. I found Nara to be the best of the three cities because it’s not wrapped up by concrete all around. In addition, another peculiarities of the city which I really liked are the deers; there are plenty of them and they are free to roam around, even in the temples area. The temple itself is just beautiful. It looks impressive from the outside and the gates are one better than the other. Also the interiors are quite nice and there are impressive Buddha statues. The only cons I would like to flag is the amount of people around the temple area (too many at times).
