One of the largest complexes of its kind in the country, Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple represents one of the country's most important religious sites. The 10th-century Shingon Buddhist temple, just a short jaunt from the city's airport, sits within sprawling grounds dotted with many shrines, halls, and pagodas, each featuring classic swooping rooftops adorned with gold and red accents. Don't miss the complex's main pagoda, a 58 m (190 ft) tall structure erected in the 1980s. Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple Reviews
If you have at least half a day layover, it is a must see. The buildings and layout are beautiful and informative of Japanese culture. more »

They are very beautiful and colorful buildings, connected by streets and squares. All around there are statues and devotional equipment. Despite the presence of many people, I appreciated its silence and serenity. A place to visit for sure, for its great artistic and religious interest.
If you have a layover at Narita airport for more than 4 hours, I would highly recommend you stepping out and taking the tour of this beautiful shrine not too far away from the airport. A quick 20 min ride and some walk through this pretty area leads to you to this shrine. You get a glimpse of Japanese food, Eel is a specialty here, some crafts and so much more The shrine itself is set on beautiful grounds, almost Forest Lake area and pretty landscape. The structure is a wooden Pagoda and the minute you enter you feel meditative. I have not been to Japan so I felt that this was a great introduction to that amazing country
For somewhere so close to the airport this place sure is out of the way. And touristy. And expensive. ぜんざい for 750円? Really?? The temple itself is nice and expansive, but this place really is a tourist destination so I wouldn't lose sleep over giving it a miss. There are billions of nice temples in Japan for you to visit.
