Soak up the atmosphere and history of Nezu Shrine, a Shinto shrine said to be one of the country's oldest. According to legend, Prince Osu founded the shrine in the 1st century CE, just north from the spot where it currently resides. The 17th-century Shogun Tsunayoshi Tokugawa then moved the shrine to its current location to celebrate his having selected an heir. Made in traditional Gongen style, the shrine's vermilion coloration fits in nicely with the surrounding leafy scenery, and several of its architectural features--including the main hall, sanctuary, worship hall, and large gates--are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Tokyo holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Nezu Shrine and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

I’ve seen a lot of temples and I’m not easily impressed. This one is lovely. Not overrun with tourists. Suitably impressive building. A nice path with torii gates. Pleasant gardens. Peaceful. A bit off the beaten track but worth a visit in my opinion.
Very nice shrine. Really worth walking through. It was not busy on weekdays. And it was really peaceful.
