Walk across the impressive vermillion bridge to Nikko Futarasan jinja, a Shinto shrine that forms part of a wider World Heritage Site. Legend has it that a priest named Shodo was climbing the mountain in 766, but could not cross the river here. He prayed until a god with two snakes wrapped around his right arm appeared. The snakes unfurled to form a colorful bridge, allowing the priest and his followers to reach the other bank. Founded in 767, the shrine has become particularly well known for its two old swords, officially deemed National Treasures of Japan, along with several of its buildings and structures, including the bridge. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Nikko holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Nikko Futarasan jinja and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

Nikko Futarasan jinja Reviews
二荒山神社 Futarasan Shrine is famous for Matchmaking shrine. There are some interesting things. It’s very close from 日光東照宮 Nikko Toshogu. more »
観光客がごった返して時間も無かったため世界遺産の日光東照宮に行けなかったので、せめてと思っていきました。 入場料はありませんが、東照宮行ったついでに行くといいかも？ more »I couldn't go to Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a World Heritage Site, because i didn't have time for tourists to return, so I thought at least. There is no entrance fee, but i think it's a good idea to go to Toshogu Shrine.
Another beautiful temple complex in Nikko with its own characteristics. The temple is easily approachable from the bus stop and you can spend hours there ... so mind the time :-)
My Japanese friend told me that this isn't the original Futarasan. The original one is a small not-so-fancy one right by Lake Chuzenji. We visited that first before coming to this one. I like the origins one better. It was intimate and not crowded. The energy of the space was so connectable. We were also lucky to be able to join a Shinto blessing ceremony that was arranged by a Japanese group. This Futarasan is fun and cheerful with many interactive stations built to engage visitors for blessings. It is better to go in the afternoon when the tour buses have driven away with the day trippers from Tokyo.
