Visit hilltop fortifications of ancient Ainu people and observe Japanese Edelweiss at Rebun Island. Stretching 29 km (18 mi) from north to south and 8 km (5 mi) from east to west, the island provides trekking routes through nature, as the island is part of a larger national park. You can find trail maps in English at the ferry area. Over 300 varieties of rare alpine flowers can be spotted on an 8-hour hike across the island and shorter well-marked scenic trails. While here, taste sea urchins, a specialty of the area. Due to the infrequency of buses, you may consider renting a car. It is absolutely worth to travel to Rebun if you are in Japan and heading north. Great scenery, fantastic walks and great food. Just include the island in your travel plan. more »

We've been here in late september 2017. We got to the ferry termial early morning and took a taxi from the termial to Kafukai, where we started trekking towards Funadomari along the western side of the island (most people go the opposite way). The views on the island are absolutely amazing. The skies and sea were blue and everything around us was colored with beautiful green. From Kafukai start walkig westwards. Once you leave the forest you will see great mountains and hills surrounding you. Continue walking until you reach a fishing village called Uennai. From there continue walking north along the Sea of Japan for about 15-20 minutes (watch out for the very sharp rocks on the shore) untill you reach a small river mouth. There you will need to climb a very steep and a bit dangerous slope. Once you reach the top there is only blue skies, lots of greenery and amazing views until you get to the northern shore of the island. I beleive the trek was around 15-18 km and it took us around six hours, includig stops to watch the view. From Funadomari we took the bus to the ferry termial and back to Wakkanai. You need to be a bit in shape for this one, but absolutely recommended.
