Former Hokkaido Government Office Building, Sapporo

#1 of 424 in Historic Sites in Hokkaido
Government Building · Historic Site
Featuring a red brick construction and central dome, Former Hokkaido Government Office Building remains one of the country's rare examples of Neo-Baroque architecture. The historic landmark boasts a distinctive appearance based on government buildings from the American state of Massachusetts. Built in 1888 and rebuilt in 1911, the structure features a colorful flower garden, arched windows, block rooftops, and multiple protruding chimneys. Head inside to check out a small museum on the second floor, home to a collection of artifacts and displays chronicling the history of the island and the city. Keep in mind that many of the exhibit descriptions inside the building do not have English translations. • The facilities of the former Hokkaidō Government Officein Sapporo, Japan, include a conference room, a museum shop, a tourist information office, and a few historical exhibition rooms and libraries. Visitors can enter the building for free. Flower gardens and a pond are located in front of the building, which occasionally are designated as some event venues.
  • The old Hokkaido Government building and its nice park is a surprise in the middle of the very tight build city center of Sapporo. A great place for a break on a city tour to relax and find some nice views under the Ginko trees.
