Takachiho Gorge, Takachiho-cho

Towering walls of basalt accented by several waterfalls awe visitors at Takachiho Gorge, a chasm formed by the waters of the Gokase River. At more than 120,000 years old, the gorge winds its way through the dense forests carpeting the surrounding landscape. You can make use of the 1 km (0.6 mi) paved walking trail that tracks the edge of the canyon, offering views down to the river below and passing several historic shrines along the way. Alternatively, rent a rowboat to explore from atop the water. Enclosed by imposing cliffs that reach as high as 100 m (328 ft) in places, you'll pass by streaming cascades like the Manai Waterfall, which drops from a height of 17 m (56 ft). • The canyon, which was eroded by lava hardened in a columnar shape, is fascinated by its unique regularbeauty. The waterfalls and river-going boats that flow down the canyon are full of attractions and are exciting for young and old. The boat is 1500 yen for 30 minutes. The well-maintained promenade is relatively friendly to the elderly.

  • There are many places in Japan that are hard to go to, but this is the best of them. It took me a while to get to the poor access, but it's worth coming. It's a really great place. I went to Takachiho Bus Terminal by bus from Miyazaki to Nobeoka and Nobeoka by JR. I was able to get round trip for 1800 yen for a one-day ticket of miyako bus, but it is careful because there is a flight of some exclusions. Because it is about 1900 yen only one way when I usually pay the ride fee, the person of the day trip is sure to pass a one-day ticket by all means.

  • Beautiful valley and waterfall. Boat rentals are very affordable, and there has always been nearby parking available every time I've gone. Signage in English is very sparse, so be sure to Google the historical/religious significance of it as well!
  • Such a scenic place to see. It is totally worth to visit. Rowing a boat and a bit of hiking are so much fun. We went in winter, the weather is cold but the trees are still green. We all love it.
