  • Nestled right next to Takayama’s old town, the Showa-kan focuses on a considerably more recent slice of history. (“Showa” refers to the reign of Emperor Hirohito, in particular the post-war 1950s and ...  more »
  • We absolutely loved this museum!! You have to enter a shop that sells toys and confectionery and then pay the entrance at 800 yen per person and finally enter the museum. Allow at least 1 hour and a half to visit this museum. It's full of things with lots of stagings. It's really, really well done. The exhibition takes place on two levels. It's everywhere, you don't know where to start, it's a treat. A pachinko room is even present, you can play it for free, it's very nice! There is also a cinema. Very very nice and it allows to discover a period of the history of Japan which, I think, is not necessarily very well known. This is another angle to approach the history of Japan. We highly recommend this visit. In addition it is one of the very very rare place still open after 4:30 pm! It closes at 6pm, so plan to go from 4pm.

  • A fun display of post-war Japanese cultural artefacts, with every day places such as the barber's, the classroom etc recreated in a lot of detail. We had fun in the retro 80s games room playing Mario and King Kong and enjoyed the old pachinko machines as well. There isn't a lot of explanation and so for non Japanese natives, many references remain obscure. It would be great to create a narrative for foreign (and Japanese) visitors, to make the visit more informative.
  • I REALLY enjoyed our visit today. The museum houses an overwhelming quantity of memorabilia, historic objects & relics of days gone by. The “hands-on” for visitors is great fun. I guess the paucity of written information (in Japanese, or any other language) is a drawback, but when entry is free, and funding for such enterprises probably limited, that’s understandable.
