Get smothered by stampeding rabbits on Okunoshima Island--a former secret government location for the manufacture of chemical weapons turned haven for cute and cuddly creatures. Visit the museum documenting the poison gas production and the island's' role in World War II. Here, artifacts and accounts tell of the terrible plight of the factory employees, who often suffered horrendous side effects. Note that English information is slightly limited here. After the museum, counter the bleak history by getting acquainted with the current local inhabitants, who are very tame and will hop over you in search of something to eat. Okunoshima Island Reviews

more »
I visited from 9:40 to 11:40. Around the island to bring food. The other day, I got a piece of cabbage. Because the amount of food of the port is small, and it is not sold in the island, it is recommended to prepare in advance. While feeding, taking a picture. When I went around, the boat just came home. It is a good place, but I think that it is better to be careful because there are few shipping.View original -
more »
There are two ways to stay on this island. Choose between staying at a national residence or staying at this campsite. I didn't have much information about the campsite, so I chose this one. The site is quite spacious and divided into 10 plots. However, because the sea side is a sidewalk, it is seen with a frosty eye rather than seeing a rabbit. Lol At night, the sound of the passing ship was so quiet that I sometimes heard it. However, the receptionist, the toilet, and the kitchen were all far away, and it was just a bed.View original

My wife and I had mixed expectations about visiting. We were very pleasantly surprised! A few points worth noting: 1. The rabbits are in good health, and they are friendly. We encountered many of them and fed them. They showed no aggression to us at all and despite being wild they were very delicate taking food. Some even let us pet them and obviously enjoyed it. 2. The ferry schedule is a little confusing, and in retrospect it would have been easy to get stranded on the island overnight if you don't determine your departure time and pier number (there are more than 1) before arriving. Also note that your arrival pier might not be your departure pier. Finally, the train back to Hiroshima or elsewhere stops running pretty early, so check that too. All in all, lots of fun! Interesting too with the old chemical weapons factory buildings. A bit of history for any adults who aren't interested in the rabbits (you are, admit it).

Lovely day trip. A lap of the island and a picnic lunch will take you from mid morning to the 4pm ferry. Bring some extra veggies for the hungry buns and make sure to check out all the historical sights.
