Jōmon Sugi, Yakushima-cho

A Japanese cedar thousands of years old, Jōmon Sugi has been named a World Heritage Site. Standing at 1,280 m (4,200 ft) above sea level, it is also the largest tree on the island and is often a central part of a solid day's hike in the Yakushima Mountains. If trees could talk, this 30 m tall (100 ft) Jomon cedar would tell a history of the world since the Stone Age. Take a guess at its age--scientists believe it to be between 2,600 and 7,200 years old. • It takes more than eight hours to get to and from The Arakawa Trailing Gate to see Jomon sugi, but i think you can enjoy it if you go trekking with Wilson stock and daioh sugi on the way. I looked at Miyanoura-dake and Nagata-dake during the vertical run, but it is big that pulls out the vitality. Worth a look.

  • In June 2018, we went to see Jomon Sugi for about 10 hours. From Arakawa Tozanguchi to Jomon Sugi is only 11km one way and 22km on a round trip. There is a restroom (portable restroom booth) on the way, but because there is no shop, food and water must be brought. Yakushima, where there are a lot of rainy days per year, and upper and lower rain gear and trekking shoes are essential. If you use a trekking pole, you must have a rubber cap on the tip. From the Arakawa climbing entrance to the entrance of the large stock sidewalk, there is a board spread by the trolley road about 8k, and it is easy to walk. It becomes a mountain climb (about 2.5k) from the large stock sidewalk. Jomon cedar can be seen from the wood deck, but i think that it is good to have a telephoto lens for the person who is brought a camera etc. because there is a distance. Drones are also prohibited. I went to see Jomon cedar, but i think the nature along the way is also wonderful and very good spot. It is recommended to go while there is physical strength in time.
