Port de Peche, Nouakchott

#1 of 18 in Things to do in Mauritania
Pier / Boardwalk · Tourist Spot
Watch fishers bring in their daily catch sold on the spot at Port de Peche, a beach and a bustling fishing wharf in the capital. The wharf and the long sandy beach teem with human activity, as fishers drag in their heavy nets or bring in the catch in brightly painted canoes. Porters take the load from boats, unloading crates of fish onto donkey carts or hoisting them on their heads, and carry them off to stands to be sorted, gutted, filleted, and displayed for further sale or to dry. If you want to do the work yourself, bring your own fishing gear or get some from the shops nearby. Weekend evenings see lots of crowds here, especially in the hot season. Swimming is not recommended due to strong currents. Take the guesswork out of planning a Nouakchott vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.
