Kumari Chowk, Kathmandu

#7 of 50 in Historic Sites in Kathmandu
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Visit a sacred attraction at Kumari Chowk, a courtyard inside a red-brick, three-level building that was once home to Kumari, a girl selected to be the town's living goddess until she reaches puberty and becomes mere mortal. The tradition represents "devi," the Hindu concept of female spiritual energy. Wooden balconies and windows surround the courtyard where the Kumari appears daily at regular times. Keep in mind that visitors can photograph the courtyard, but photos of the Kumari are forbidden. As you wander the conplex, look closely for intricate carvings on the doors and walls of the temple.
