Castelo de S. Jorge, a second-century citadel, overlooks the historical center of the city. This castle dates back to medieval times, approximately 48 BCE, when the city was under Roman rule. Celtic people originally inhabited this hilltop location, but ownership of the area changed over the years from Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians to Romans and a few other key players. In the 10th century, Moorish people fortified the fortress with cerca Moura, or Moorish encirclement. Though the 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed much of the castle, the remaining ruins are still open to the public. Explore one of the city's most popular tourist sites by foot, take in views from its high vantage point, and discover the castle's archeological and historic relevance. Plan to see Castelo de S. Castelo de S. Jorge Reviews
The castle commands the highest point in Lisbon and while there isn't much to do but stroll around and take in its vistas, it is well worth the price of admission and so very peaceful in the morning.... more »
The castle has a large garden with lovely flowers and orange trees. Some trees had blossom and oranges in them at the same time. How weird! What the castle also has, are peacocks... very big... more »
It is of utmost importance that if you're visiting Lisbon, that you come to the Castle of Saint Jorge. Sit with your better half at the Romantic Garden. See the views from the vantage points around the Castle Grounds Retaining Walls. Walk over the Atria and the Watchtowers. It was great to walk, sit and contemplate on the site of real history and my personal heritage.
it is one major attraction of Lisbon. A must see because of the ruins of the castle and the views from its privileged location. Attention is required when walking the towers because steps are irregular (no handrail) and it can be slippery. The Castle is located in one of the oldest areas of Lisbon. The way to the Castle , walking up those old street adds to the visit. Short walking distance from Downtown and Commerce Square (another must see)
