Andong Hahoe Folk Village, Andong

4.0
UNESCO-listed Andong Hahoe Folk Village showcases traditional tile-roofed and thatch-roofed Korean houses. Explore the village, found nestled in the foothills of Hwasan Mountain, to learn more about Joseon architecture and culture as you marvel at the traditional houses on display. Whilst most of the homes remain closed to the public to maintain the villagers' privacy, some do allow entry to their courtyards, where you can get a sneak peek of village life. The village has also earned reknown for its preservation of folklore traditions, valuable books, transcripts, and structure of clan-based villages living side-by-side. It became even more popular in 1999 when Queen Elizabeth of England visited the area. Make sure you try a local delicacy during your visit, such as Andong Soju, a distilled alcoholic beverage not for the faint-hearted. • This village gives a snapshot of the lives of the people in the early days of the Korean history. You will need to spend at least half a day to cover most part of the village/  more »
  • Extremely disappointed by this Unesco-labelled village. Little charm. Closed houses behind speakers. Not much to see in the end. No village life either. Too many cars in the alleys spoil the ride. In addition, Korean and Chinese tourists travel in a golf cart. Totally incongruous in a village of this size. The few portals that remain open suggest a lot of unglamorous stuff. One wonders why the Unesco label was awarded here. We clearly preferred another Unesco YANGDONG village. Hahoe's only interest is the free mask and dance show.

  • Great village to visit when visiting Andong, the "spirit capital of Korea". There are a number of places to see within this place, including the great spirit tree where you can write your wish on a piece of paper, as well the tree Queen Elizabeth II planted in 1999. You can hire a small two-person vehicle to travel around. There are also other restaurants and shops around the village, which is a short walk/bus ride away. The only note of caution I provide is to check the air pollution amounts before visiting, as some pollution amounts can get dangerous. Bringing a good face mask is highly recommended in such cases.
  • An absolute breath taking place. They even provide mini drive it yourself golf cart for you to drive around the whole place. Price is around $25 dollar ish for the whole hour, it is pretty worth the price if travelling with elderly. Overall this place was quite worth the travel!
