Trip Planner:   Asia  /  South Korea  /  Seoul  /  Dongdaemun Market

Dongdaemun Market, Seoul

With a few dozen malls, 30,000 specialized shops, and 50,000 manufacturers all centered around a landmark gate, Dongdaemun Market combines traditional and modern shopping. Home to the biggest clothing suppliers in the country, the market offers textiles, clothes, wedding wear, shoes, and accessories in addition to electronics, toys, and food. Shop until you drop and get some really good clothing bargains. Wholesalers come at night to pick up the latest fabrics, making this sleepless district bustle until early in the morning. • So much shopping! The shopping in Seoul is amazing. All levels from very inexpensive to exclusive. I bought my suveniers from the mom & pop shops that are all over the place: underground & on the streets. The ability of so many tiny shops to survive is due to no Wal-Mart or targets downtown, so good for that. I bought pretty Korean made dresses & scarves as gifts from the Korean made district. So many shopping areas.
  • Really cheap and best market in dongdaemun seoul.
  • Very fun market. Their night market is something to see! The food was amazing and sometimes they had entertainment by one of their big malls.
  • Fashion designers, search no more! If you are looking for a place to buy fabrics and materials to create your own clothes or get custom made curtains or covers, this will be a paradise for you. Whole buildings with all the fabrics, materials and textiles you can dream about. Dozens of places to get those materials transformed into real things, and custom made traditional hanbok clothes ordered to fit your exact size. One small thing: bring someone who speaks korean if you intend to buy here. Some places are wholesale shops, but most sell detail to everyone.
  • Make sure you go to the visitor center and get a map...or bring one. Fun semi outdoor shopping. Review how to haggle with Koreans before you go...have fun.

Where to stay in Seoul

The Seoul metropolitan area has two districts especially appealing to backpackers--Jongno just northeast of the city, and Hongdae to the west. Both offer good shopping and dining, as well as easy transport links to the rest of the city. Mid-range options may prove difficult to find in peak season (July to August), unless you don't mind staying at a traditional hanok guesthouse, where loads of character make up for any lack of amenities. Finally, a range of top-end hotels with an impressive list of services and facilities lie scattered around the city.
